T&C SKATEBOARDS CROWNS CHAMPIONS AT SUNBURN CLASSIC SKATE CONTEST AT A'ALA SKATE PARK IN HONOLULU HAWAII
T&C Skateboards Hawaii Sunburn Classic A`ala Skate Park – Honolulu,HI Saturday, September 15, 2007 HONOLULU (Wednesday, September 19, 2007) - T&C Skateboards hosted a showdown in town on Saturday as Hawaii’s top amateur skateboarders threw down their best tricks at Hawaii’s longest-running amateur skateboard contest. While the Thunderbirds screamed above the Honolulu skyline, spectators on the ground enjoyed an air show of a different kind. Competitors as young as five years old and from as far away as Paia, Maui flew over the rails and off the lip at A`ala Skate Park. More than eighty skaters battled in head-to-head heats of ten competitors, vying for “best trick” honors. First up was the 13 & under division, which maxed out registration before any other division. Preliminary heats brought a strong line-up of female skaters plus the day’s youngest competitor, five-year-old Keonimana Young-Tavai of Aiea. The talent ran deep here for such a young group and the judges awarded them accordingly with some perfect 10s.
Despite rain delays and slick ramps the young guns didn’t hold back. Eleven-year-old Tyler Medeiros of Kailua landed tricks and nabbed three perfect 10s. That put him on the top spot in his division – a great improvement over last year’s fourth-place finish. Kevin O`Shea of Kailua finished second with a pair of 9s. Eight-year-old Lyon Farrell of Paia earned third as a last-minute entry after scrambling to borrow a board for his heat. Sunset Beach surfer Ryan Shanley proved he can carve concrete as well as waves by taking home fourth-place honors. The brother and sister duo of Young-Tavai and his sister Kealani earned fifth and sixth place respectively. The 14-17 division took to the ramps and rails next. Troy Pintarelli of Haleiwa represented the North Shore well with a first-place finish in one of the most competitive divisions in the contest. Jason Park of Kaneohe proved he’s got the skills to earn second place - another big improvement over last year’s fourth-place finish. Rounding out the top three in the 14-17 division was Jared Tomi. Mark Lagunte of Mililani took fourth. Leif Kennedy of Waimanalo, who aged up one division this year, proved he can compete with the big boys by placing fifth. Codie Wallace of Wahiawa showed consistency in his skills that earned him a slew of 8s from the judges and a sixth-place finish. The smooth style of Hawaii’s more experienced skaters raised the bar for competitors in the 18 & over division. Shoya Kubo of Honolulu kept photographers busy with tricks that rivaled skaters in the sponsored division. His ability to get more air and land tougher tricks earned him first-place honors. Brandon Bento of Waipahu earned 10s from two judges, good for second place. Trevor Webb has definitely been doing in time at Mililani Skate Park near his home. He walked away with third-place honors. Daniel Sparrow’s consistent performance throughout earned him fourth, while Todd Dunlap of Aiea took fifth. Ryan Chong of Honolulu rounded out his division in sixth place. Veteran skaters in the sponsored division took their turn last and produced the loudest cheers of the day. Tim Jackson’s double-digit points scores from judges gave him first-place honors. Keith Yamaguchi was a close second, and Nathan Guest took third-place honors back home to Maui. T&C team rider Chris “Applenuts” Awong earned fourth. Reigning champ Bryan Wyland took fifth and Brandon Kays wrapped up the sponsored division in sixth. Between heats and rain delays, professional team riders put on skate demos and attended an autograph session. Kids handed over their boards, t-shirts and posters to be signed by their favorite pros, including Ezekiel’s Louie Barletta, Stu Graham and Jeff Pepper as well as Blind’s Jake Duncombe, James Craig and Ronnie Creager. This year’s contest was a benefit for the Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu and was made possible with support from local boardsports industry professionals, including Heavywater magazine, Ezekiel, Blind, Sobe/Lifewater, as well as Star 101.9.
